In the UK the term moderate Islam is used to differentiate it from fundamentalist or extremist.

I'm not saying its right or wrong, but that's just the way it is. If you want to change it better speak to some of your UK brothers and sisters.

it is unfortunate that in some places (or some instances) we do have to resort to using an adjective. this has generally spawned from our inability to act as one ummah, but Allahu knows best. however we should use hikmah when asked, "what group do we belong to?" and answer in a way that destroys the concept of groups existing in islam. just my 2 cents.

There is a subtle danger to this.. because Muslims did not invent the term "moderate Islam" it was non-Muslims who did.
The media and Neo-Con politicians in America and Europe are constantly defining the term "moderate Muslims" or "moderate Islam" and thereby making Muslims believe that if they are NOT extremists that they should be conforming to this ideology.

It is a way to manipulate the Ummah from outside in a very subtle fashion; but it works.

Better for us to say that terrorist organizations claiming to act on Islamic values are acting outside of Islam and move on rather than adopting the labels that non-Muslims have created for us.

Oh I completely understood what you meant by it. I'm just lamenting the fact that we, as an ummah, have been forced into a position of having to define our faith in such a manner.

We SHOULD be able to simply say "Muslim" and then have those who pervert the faith be recognized readily as "extremists" or "Deviants."

There are many factors as to WHY we've been reduced to this; most of them lie squarely on the shoulders of the ummah itself.
